Exploring QuackTrack

Today I looked at QuackTrack — more specifically, QuackTrack’s list of blogs in the Journalism category. Journalism is a sub-category of Media. The only subcategory within Journalism is, interestingly to me, Photojournalism, where I discovered the engrossing blog PhotoJournalism, by Mark M. Hancock. (Today he has Mardi Gras pictures.) There are 43 blogs in Photojournalism, compared with 641 blogs in Journalism.

There are lots of sites where we can search for blogs by category and/or by tags. These include Technorati, Kinja (try a search for online journalism) and Google Blog Search.

I’m making a note of all this because there are times when I feel a need to check and see what’s happening off the radar, away from the big and better-known blogs that either discuss journalism or practice it, or both.

Hi Mindy! Thanks for stopping by QuackTrack. We get a lot of our direction on what sub-categories from our sister-site BlogShares. What other sub-industries would be good additions to Journalism? Particular specialties which bloggers focus on? I’d be glad to add some new categories for the hundreds of journalism blogs out there. Thanks!

I’d say political journalism would definitely be a big category. Possibly one for entertainment journalism. Some of the blogs on the list are clearly regional — China, Middle East. Some are in Spanish, but those are from many countries. Some of the blogs in the category ARE journalism, while others are meta-journalism, or blogs ABOUT journalism. Dave Barry is on the list … we like to think of him as a journalist, but he’s not exactly a hard-news guy! Not sure what to call him … other than “columnist.” But then, what blogger isn’t a columnist?

Sports journalism is a completely different beast.
There are several blogs by editors/copy editors as well.
Lastly, there are opinion/editorial blogs on almost every major newspaper now.
