Notes from the classroom and observations about today’s practice of journalism online

Spread of online video

I’m in Bulgaria with Regina McCombs, an online video journalist from the Minneapolis Star Tribune. We’re teaching Web video to journalists here. Bulgaria is where the U.S. was a couple of years ago, with most of the online video coming only from TV outlets.

Lost Remote reported yesterday that in the month of September alone, MSNBC.com served 88 million video streams to 26.7 million unique visitors. A lot of that is video from the TV network, of course. The point is, people do watch video online.

I presented an overview of online journalism strategies popular in the U.S. today. There was a Powerpoint too, but it was mostly screenshots, and I have not uploaded that.

Here, as in most of Europe, texting is much, much more common than in the U.S. However, WAP (mobile data) is just getting started. There is affordable broadband for residential use, but I’m told it is slower than most broadband in U.S.
