Tom Petty slideshow, by student journalists

Our students at The Independent Florida Alligator are drinking that new media Kool-Aid! The audio could be better (sounds like they may have used a cheap microphone), but the photos (by Jason Henry) are fantastic. Production by Tim Hussin and Andrea Morales — the Alligator’s photo editors. Soundslides was used (I’m so proud of them). At 23 shots and 1 min. 11 sec., it’s a very nice package. Clean and accessible Web design (all CSS) by Brett Roegiers.

In case you don’t know, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers came from Gainesville, Fla., but they haven’t played “at home” in 13 years. Stevie Nicks was on stage with them when they played their long-overdue homecoming show here last week.

I can give you a little background on the audio capture. Since you were away, I guess I was the next target on their “borrow gear” list. The audio was captured on some Olympus recorder and on my Microtrack, which they borrowed. No mics were borrowed from me, so I imagine the onboard mics were used. From watching the shows, my guess is that the Microtrack was used for the interior stuff (like the Mayor) and the Olympus was used outside.

I also heard that the student using the MicroTrack stood directly in front of the speakers at the press conference. Oops! Well, every story we report is a learning experience.

I didn’t have time Thursday, when she came to borrow it, to teach the fine points of mic level adjustment, which would have made that better. I basically said, “This is how you turn it on and this is the ‘record’ button.”
