It was a strange marriage anyway, at least in my mind. Doomed from the start. But there was all that giddy optimism at the outset, everyone smiling and toasting, handing out money, building new houses they could live in together … In the face of , you couldn’t mouth off about what a dumb idea it was.
I knew it was over last fall when an AME at a roughly 100,000 circ. daily said to me, “I don’t see that we ever really got anything out of this partnership” with the local TV station. Of course, the newspaper got to use video. But it’s crappy local TV news video. It’s just another form of shovelware — and that’s not what brings people to your Web site.
So now The New York Times is . I remember all the occasions when I showed their little Page One video to audiences (Discovery used to produce this daily video version of the Times’s Page One, and you could watch it at the nytimes.com Web site). Audiences of non-newspaper people tended to be skeptical that the video had any point. I would say, well, they’re trying to reach out to new audiences.
I give the Times credit for trying. I watched three hours of the excellent documentary on the Discovery Times channel (which I didn’t even realize I had on my cable lineup until I went searching for this documentary), and while the journalism was maybe not as deep as the recent Frontline documentary , it was much better than anything we see nowadays on NBC, CBS, ABC or Fox.
Now the Times has the matchless Naka Nathaniel shooting video of globetrotting Nick Kristof instead of building the (in my opinion) much richer slideshows he used to make. I compared with , and I think I get a lot more — in terms of narrative AND information — out of the earlier slideshow. (You probably can’t see those two examples unless you have paid for Times Select.)
I’m sure we are going to see from non-TV news organizations this year. Some of it will be bad. But it will get better. The exciting thing is that by divorcing the TV partner, the newspapers become free to produce new kinds of video stories that are better suited to the online medium.
