Finally, people are starting to talk — not numbers OF podcasts, but whether anyone is listening. I’ve been kind of annoyed at the extreme volume of buzz about podcasts. I have asked several online newspaper folks about how many downloads they’re getting for their podcasts, and so far, none of them HAVE any numbers. , and so am I.
At the this weekend, two Syracuse graduate students presented a paper titled “A Periodical Phenomenon: A Look at Podcasting’s Effect on Newspaper Audience, Advertising, and Atmosphere” that (in spite of its title) made for a very interesting presentation. Major Highfield and Justin Sablich interviewed producers from about 10 news Web sites that were producing podcasts last fall and learned that the producers don’t know how many downloads they have. They also don’t know who is downloading podcasts. The researchers found that subscription rates are quite low, matching my assumption that many people probably just grab podcasts one at a time.
Last night I was tipped to (thanks, !), which provides a directory to podcasts and a Top 10 list too.
