Information graphic: Inside a crime scene
Bakersfield.com is really covering the waterfront on a big local murder trial. It makes sense, because the Bakersfield sites and newspaper seem to “get” local like almost nobody else!
The graphics and layout of the anchor page really communicate well, eschewing those crammed little lists of blue headlines that most news sites resort to when making a compilation like this one.
The somewhat interactive Crime Scene Map tells part of the story by giving us a bird’s-eye view into the home where five family members were killed.
Davin McHenry wrote about how long it took a team of three to produce the Flash graphics.
Note that 3-D modeling software was used to create the illustration. Some news graphics artists are already using 3-D for their print work, so that’s not the issue in how long this online graphic might have taken. The Flash involved in the crime scene map is really, really simple. It consists of 12 simple rollovers, which can be done with button symbols. You could create this graphic within days of first starting to learn Flash.
