Pownce might have potential
Jason Pontin (writing in The New York Times on Sunday) anointed Pownce as the next great online thing:
What struck me most was the site’s potential to be powerfully disruptive. Most file-sharing occurs on public sites, which can be monitored by media companies; if the users violate copyrights, the sites or the users themselves can be threatened into compliance or litigated out of existence (as happened with the original Napster). File sharing on Pownce would be difficult to police. (Story reprinted at CNet.)
I have six Pownce invitations. I will give them to the first six people I know who post a comment on this post (don’t forget to enter your real e-mail into the form; it’s safe with me). If I know you only online, that’s okay (Ryan? Mark? Melissa?).
So far, I don’t see the appeal. But then, I’m a once-a-week Facebook user and only an occasional Twitter user. Don’t count on my judgment in this case.
Update (6:21 p.m): I think Pontin must be mistaken. Ten hours later, I still have two invitations left (out of six). But I do have 15 friends on Pownce. Aww …

Semi-obscure fanboy trivia: Pownce made with Django. May I have an invite please?
July 31, 2007 at 9:16 ami’d love to check it out and see what all fuss is all about….
but even more importantly…. YOU’RE ON FACEBOOK?!
=)
July 31, 2007 at 9:28 amIt all depends on the ease of use and, of course, … marketing. Looking forward to taking it for a test drive — Thanks Mindy.
July 31, 2007 at 9:28 amHi, Suzi. I don’t actually know you, so — sorry!
July 31, 2007 at 9:38 amHi, Mindy. I check your site every day. Would like to see what Pownce is.
July 31, 2007 at 10:00 amsurely we’ve met in a former life…
July 31, 2007 at 10:06 amHi, John and Trent. You both seem like fine young journalists, but I don’t know you.
July 31, 2007 at 10:27 amBesides saying I’m a fan, and noting (in disclosure) we had you for training here, I invoke the name of super OS.com producer Danny Sanchez in hopes of getting a password! We’d try using it for shuttle launch next week. (We Twitter-ed last one with modest success.) JC
July 31, 2007 at 11:03 amI don’t understand this or any other social-y network-y site, but I’m a sucker for anything with even a whiff of scarcity or exclusivity. May I have an invite, please?
July 31, 2007 at 11:32 amI wonder how many of these Web 2.0 sites will be around in a few years time. Anyone remember Friendster? Having said that, this is a time of experimentation and the ones that people find most useful will, in the end, survive.
July 31, 2007 at 12:32 pmDamn, I missed out on invites; I’ve been giving Pownce puppy-eyes for a week now to no avail. But I’d still like to make a comment! I can see the appeal of Pownce even without sharing ripped music. Heck, I have iMeem for that. But for lazy folks like me who love to get everything done in one place… well, I can message my coworkers and friends, send them the video I found or the story I’m working on, etc. And all without leaving the site. Whew, I’ll save myself a few mouse-clicks when it goes pubic!
Okay, so maybe it’s not going to save the world, but aren’t you a little curious about Pownce? They’re all saying it’s going to blow Facebook out of the water. Not go goad (well, maybe a little!) but I’d love to see your review of Pownce.

Four gone. Two to go …
You have to be someone I actually know, like Matt, Melissa, Mark and Alf. Those are the four so far. I love all of you, but how do I know if I really want to “friend” you?
July 31, 2007 at 1:31 pmFor those souls who don’t have the asymptotic joy involved in knowing Mindy well enough for a Pownce invite, there is a group called “Invites to share” on Facebook where people are horsetrading all kinds of invites to various sites, and this website: http://www.inviteshare.com/ is devoted completely to pooling invites. (I don’t work for that site or endorse it – I’ve just seen it in my travels. There are probably others.)
It’s a sad situation when there are sites devoted to invites to other sites, IMHO. But maybe I’m just grumpy … KoolAid, anyone?
July 31, 2007 at 6:02 pmOh sure, I’ll bite. I’m still avoiding Twitter on general principle, but everyone’s all a-twitter (apologies) over Pownce, so I’ll take an invite if you’ve still got one.
July 31, 2007 at 8:02 pmWas that a request from gritz? If not, may I have an invite? I’m skeptical of the appeal, too, but am intrigued enough to give it a try.
July 31, 2007 at 9:10 pm[...] and immediately wonders what the heck to do with it. Mindy McAdams was offering, and, as I said there, I’m a complete sucker for anything with even a whiff, no matter how [...]
July 31, 2007 at 11:02 pmDo you still have those two pownce invites left? i’d like one if possible please? i am on myspace, youtube, facebook, flickr, linkedin … probably others too
