Another reason why external mics may not have been introduced to the equation is that the use of professional mics requires probably another day's instruction, and, depending on the budget of the boot camp itself, purchasing 20 mics (and cameras that are enabled to use them) might drive up the cost much more than one might think. Often, it's the difference between high-end consumer stuff and pro-sumer gear, which can be twice as expensive.
It sounds like there were many cameras about, which makes me think they threw everything at you they had. Your comment about a real course in this subject taking 15 weeks was right on. I teach broadcast writing and editing and run boot camps from time to time. It's difficult with students taking full course loads to find two days, much less four, to run a boot camp.

Heh heh ... I wrote that just for you, Regina. The proper use of proper gear WAS discussed, though! I can understand the reasoning -- you've got 20 people who are beginners, and the first order of business is just to get them using the camera the right way. (Like Joe Weiss' paper mics exercise.)

"No one had an external mic of any kind. No one had headphones. No tripods. We went out with naked cameras."
ARGHHHHHHHH
[Runs screaming from the room]
