Teaching Online Journalism

When competition comes to town, a newspaper blinks

Newspaper Web sites — it’s hard to know where to begin explaining what’s wrong with them. Rather than beat a dead horse, you could think about the reasons why a non-newspaper local news Web site completely trumps a newspaper site in its own market.

This is the fascinating subject of a post Howard Owens made yesterday. Good reading!

I’d like to mention that the front of the Newzjunky site is pretty darned ugly — but it’s easy to scan and process the information there in spite of that. The heads are very easy to read and tell you exactly what the story is about. The top tier is all local, local, local. An interesting case study.
