Flash training materials and new examples
I ran a workshop for journalists yesterday in Tampa, Florida, as part of an event hosted by the Florida Society of Newspaper Editors (FSNE) and the Florida Press Association (FPA). The workshop began at 10:30 a.m. and lasted until 4 p.m.
Since I was called in at the last minute, I did not prepare a list of links for the participants in the workshop (attended by about 20 graphic designers, page designers, and a few assorted others from nearby newspapers). So, let this suffice:
- The beginner’s exercise we completed in the workshop: Space Shuttle graphic
- The simple package example: Bartender with Martinis graphic
- Free Flash tutorials online
- My Delicious bookmarks for Flash journalism examples
And here are a few of my current favorite examples of Flash journalism:
- International Space Station detailed animation (USA Today)
- Fighting for Iraq video overlay and maps backgrounder (MSNBC.com)
- Anticipating the Inauguration audio-visual story format (The New York Times)
- Washington, D.C., in 1791 and 2008 maps and overlays (The Washington Post)
If you spend about 10-15 minutes with each of these four examples, you’ll have a good understanding of how versatile and powerful Flash can be as a storytelling tool.

Just took your online Flash tutorial — very well done. I’m one of those who learns by doing, and watching your screencast was the next best thing. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this! I used the space shuttle graphic exercise in college and was trying to find your other ones now that I am trying to get back into flash. I was just about to email my professor and ask when this popped up in my RSS. Thanks!
