Yurman's week of slideshows from the jazz festival (linked from above and: http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20090613/MULTIMEDIA/306130004/) are one of the best examples of multimedia journalism I've seen. I'll certainly be using it as a case study in my multimedia journalism teaching.

There's a great temptation in newsrooms to leap from text to video and forget the online power of still images - particularly when combined with top-quality audio, as here.

Here in the UK, the contribution of staff photographers often gets squeezed out in the dash to train multimedia journalists (to do everything including take pictures). Well, here's how the unique skills of a good photographer can prove their unequalled worth.

I take my hat off to Will Yurman. And thanks, Mindy, for sharing.

Oh - one of the requirements I'm considering for advanced students is to read a blog posting and post comments which show an understanding of the topic. An experiment. You're on the short list of blogs I know are always educational AND appropriate.

There's a blog idea - why are so many leaving their blogs/where are they going? I just joined facebook at the insistence of friends and it is a time-eater. Twitter is drawing others away.

Back you the post above: Yurman says he finds stills easier for him - and that video may be easier for others. He's correct. When I shoot stills, it can be a struggle. But with video, how to use the gear is in the background. While I'm shooting I'm processing what I hear (nats and interviews) and always thinking about the next shot and how to cover what the subject is saying. My mind is hardwired into sequencing. It would seem to be more a matter of what you know and are comfortable with.

Let me re-enforce what Debbie had to say - I, too, come to your site for the details I can't find elsewhere. You're not just a site to visit and then move on. I always leave with something I can use or mull over.

Debbie, THANK YOU for leaving a comment. It seems increasingly not worth the effort to keep up this blog nowadays because there are so few comments -- and so few links from other blogs, as others are quitting their blogs.

When I hear that someone actually gets something out of reading my posts, it gives me a little incentive to keep going.

Thank you so much for taking the time to pull this type of information together for the rest of us who are doing our best to keep up with what we need to learn for ourselves, then teach to others. Detailed and authoritatively researched materials, such as the articles on your site, are a fresh breeze in the industry and academic worlds many of us now straddle for economic survival.

This looks like just what my retired brain needs to continue working on keeping up with what's happening. Thanks. Sorry our last two Alligator board meetings conflicted with your travel schedule. See you soon, I hope.
