Newspaper Video Examples

Video online should not look like a TV report, with a talking head.

• Do you understand it? Are EPA coal emission standards strict enough? (Las Vegas Sun)
• Action: Fuel truck explosion in northeast Spokane (Spokesman-Review)
• Cheap, small cameras for video: Mexican Wrestling
• Very basic example of a sequence
• Trick bicycle rider: Proof that it's how you shoot (not the camera you use) that makes the video good (simple interview, and a nice edit)

The right subject for video

Angela Grant, who shoots video at the San Antonio Express-News, says there are three things that make a good video:

• Movement and action
• Emotion
• Something you just have to see

Make sure you watch it to the end.

If you have time and the desire to teach students a more complex editing program than WMM or iMovie, of course you should do it. But getting them started with a simple, free tool is better than not teaching them any video editing at all.
