Technologies
Software
- Adobe: I use Flash, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop very frequently to update websites, produce work for my classes, and evaluate student work. I use Adobe Media Encoder to convert videos. I am a big fan of ActionScript 3.0.
- Apple: I teach students to use iMovie. I use iMovie and Final Cut Pro to edit video.
- Microsoft: I use Word every day and Excel frequently. I can teach people to edit with Windows Movie Maker if necessary.
- Audacity: This is my preferred audio editing program because I teach it all the time. It's free and it's reliable.
- Soundslides: I love this program for creating audio slideshows with large, luscious, sharp still photographs. I like teaching it as a bridge between telling stories with sound alone and telling stories with video.
- WordPress: I am a huge fan of WordPress as a CMS for all kinds of uses (not only blogging).
Online Tools
- Firefox is still my preferred Web browser, but I use Chrome (for its speed) for casual browsing. I have a longstanding disdain for IE.
- Zotero is the most awesome research tool in the universe.
- Dropbox is my storage unit for everything.
- Delicious is my online clipping file.
- Evernote is my memory, on all my devices.
- Sakai is the course management system used throughout my university.
Code
- I love ActionScript 3.0. This was not always so.
- HTML: I believe everyone should be able to write seven basic tags by hand. It's literacy for the 21st century. We are migrating to HTML5. This is a good thing.
- CSS: Understanding how CSS works is essential for Web design. I'm not in love with all the bells and whistles of CSS3, but I'm not against them either. People who teach students to code without CSS should not be allowed to teach.
- JavaScript: I can write it. It's very similar to ActionScript 3.0.
- jQuery: I can use it, but I don't use it much.
- XML: I like using it with ActionScript 3.0.
- PHP: I can modify a WordPress template extensively.
Hardware
- My preferred computer is a MacBook Pro.
- My phone is an iPhone 3GS.
- I can use Windows. Even Windows 7.
- My preferred audio recorder is a Zoom H2. I do not use an external mic with it.
- My preferred still camera is a Canon G11.
- I do not have a preferred video camera at the moment.
